Clean fields · Clearer air · Stronger Punjab

Every field gets its Vaari.

ਵਾਰੀmeans “your turn” in Punjabi

A promised date for the Super Seeder, so no farmer has to burn paddy stubble while waiting for it.

The problem

Every autumn, Punjab's fields go up in smoke.

Once the paddy is cut, a farmer has a few weeks to sow wheat. A Super Seeder sows straight through the stubble, but a whole cluster of villages shares a handful of them. When nobody can say when the machine will come, a match is the fastest way to clear the field, and the smoke settles over the villages and the plains beyond.

Uncertainty over when a machine will arrive is a main reason farmers burn stubble.

When the fires come

Fire detections per day over the Sangrur area in October and November, 2024 and 2025 seasons together. They peak in the very weeks wheat should be sown.

Fire detections per dayBest wheat sowing fortnight (PAU)

NASA FIRMS, VIIRS on the Suomi NPP and NOAA-20 satellites; low-confidence detections left out, and a fire seen by both counts twice. Satellites pass once or twice a day and miss some fires, so these counts are a lower bound. They show heat, not who lit it.

Farmers are not the problem. Waiting is. So Vaari takes the guesswork out of the wait.

The fix

Replace the wait with a date.

Vaari plans every Super Seeder of a Custom Hiring Centre (a co-operative that rents out sowing machines) and gives each farmer a numbered token with a promised date. When a machine breaks, it re-plans without silently breaking a promise.

Today, on the phone

“Maybe next week. Call again.”

How it decides

  1. 01

    A solver decides

Constraint programming (OR-Tools CP-SAT) assigns fields to machines and days. Every promise is a hard constraint.

  2. 02

    The operator approves

Tomorrow's route for each machine waits for one approval. Windows become firm dates only then.

  3. 03

    The farmer sees why

Ask "why this date?" and Vaari re-runs the solver with your field one day earlier. What blocks it becomes the reason.

Simulated season, real fire timing

  • See a promised date

    Jaswinder, farmer

Sees one date in large type: firm for the next two days, a window further out that narrows to a firm date. If it moves, the reason is right there.

  • Plan tomorrow's machines

    Harpal, CHC operator

Opens tomorrow's plan: each machine's stops in order, who is at burn risk, one button to approve. Marks a machine as broken and watches the plan re-form.
